Tourist Attractions of Kumarakom

Nestled on the banks of the Lake Vembanad, Kumarakom captures you with its pristine beauty. There are many tourist attractions to see on your tour to Kumarakom. The scenic lake is home to a variety of flora and fauna. The brroks, canals and lagoons house a variety of marine life like the exclusive "Karimeen" or the pearl spotted fish, tiger prawns and crabs.Other than these there is a varied species of water birds and also migratory birds.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary:

The main tourist attraction in Kumarakom is the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary which is located on the banks of the Vembanad Lake with lush greenery all around. Spread over 14 acres, the Bird Sanctuary houses local birds like the water fowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron and the water duck. There are countless Kingfishers native to the region flocking in. Besides these, a variety of migratory birds come in great numbers, some from as far as Siberia. Many migratory birds like the Siberian stork, darter, heron and teal come in every year. It is truly a bird lover's dream come true!




       



Kottayam:

Kottayam is an ancient towm famous for its churches. St. Mary's church was built way back in 355A.D. with an old bell on which there is an inscription which has not been deciphered till now. There is the Ettumanoor Shiva Temple 12 km from Kottayam which has beautiful wall paintings and sculptures. The famous Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple is in Kottayam.

Vembanad Lake:

Vembanad Lake is the largest lake in Kerala famous for its panoramic backwater strtches, lush paddy fields and extensive rubber plantations. A huge network of canals and rivers empty into Lake Vembanad. It is fast emerging as a favourite backwater destination for many people the world over. Many backwater resorts all along the Lake provide facilities for boat cruises, fishing and sight seeing.
