Munnar is rightly known as the honeymooner's paradise. Dotted with lakes, reservoirs, mountain streams, wooded valleys and grassy slopes this place is truly the Kashmir of south India. Besides being a great Tourist attraction, it is an ideal getaway for anyone longing for some quiet and peace and to savour the natural beauty of the hills. There are a lot of places to visit, in and around Munnar. No visit is complete without enjoying the glorious tea plantations. Munnar is home to some of the finest tea gardens of south India.
It is about 14 kms from Munnar town and one can visit the Indo Swiss cattle project and the Madupatti dam. There are boating facilities also.
This is the highest peak in south India. One can go in for camping and trekking and is a delight for nature enthusiasts. The panoramic view from the slopes of the peak is amazing!
ERIVAKULAM NATIONAL PARK:
It is located about 15kms from Munnar and is on the Rajamalai mountain. The Nilgiri Thar, a rare species of mountain goat can be spotted here. There is other wild life also like the lion tailed Macaque, Langur and Gaur.
This place is between Munnar and Rajamala and has one of the most amazing waterfalls falling down from a height of almost 1600m. With lush greenery all around, it makes an ideal picnic spot.
It is on the way to Top Station from Munnar and gets its name from the phenomenon of natural echo here.
Chithirapuram is famous for its vast tea plantations. It is a small picture perfect place with colonial style bungalows and cottages. The Pallivasal Hydel Project is also located here.
Rajamala lies almost 2695m above sea level and is home to the Nilgiri Tahr, a rare species of mountain goats. There are over 1300 Nilgiri tahrs in Rajamala. No tour to Munnar is complete without a visit to picturesque Rajamala.
Kundala is a scenic place which comes on the way to Top Station and is one of the most popular tourist attractions around Munnar.There is a beautiful Golf Course here and there is also the Kundala artificial dam. One can also go to the Aruvikkad Water fall which is near Kundala.
This spot is an ideal place to break your journey on the way to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Thekkady. The water falls down a steep rock 2000m above sea level.
At a height of almost 1700m, this is the highest point on the Munnar - Kodaikanal road. The rare flower Neelakurunji which blooms every 12 years belong to this region. This place also offers a great view of the neighbouring state of Tamilnadu.
