Indian Airlines and Jet Airways connect Indore to Delhi, Mumbai and Bhopal. The Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar airport is 8 km from downtown regal chowk. Pre-paid taxi service is available at the airport which otherwise provides only the most basic services for transfer to the city.
Metre-guage as well as broad gauge lines link Indore to Bhopal, Ujjain, Mhow, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Kochi. Railway station is located in downtown. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are available for transfers.
Within last couple of years condition of most roads in the state has changed from non-existent to comfortably motorable and even excellent. The National Highway No 86 connecting Bhopal to Indore is one of them. For most parts the 186 km road is very smooth, with short ( 50-100 metres) slightly rough stretches. The route from Bhopal goes via Bairagarh, Kothri, Ashta, Dodi, Son Kachh, Dewas, Indore and changes between a 4-lane, double carriage-way to 2 -lane and back to 4-lane. NH 86 joins NH 3 road at Dewas By-pass. Indore is also connected by road to Mumbai, Agra, Gwalior, Ahmedabad, Bhopal and Ujjain amongst other places. Both the MP State transport corporation and private bus operators run buses to these cities. MPSTDC now operates an air-conditioned, deluxe coach service connecting Bhopal with Indore and vice-versa.
