Kanha National Parks in Madhya Pradesh

Amongst the best, Kanha is also one of the largest national parks in India.Kanha's sal and bamboo forests, grasslands and streams stretch over 940 sq km in dramatic natural splendour. This Project Tiger Reserve is home to an amazing variety of wildlife.

It is also the only habitat of the rare hard ground Barasingha. Besides there are over 200 species of birds making Kanha a bird watcher's paradise. The park is closed from July 1 to September 30. The climate at Kanha is tropical.

Summer is hot and humid and winter pleasant with an average maximum and minimum temperature of about 23 degrees and 11 degrees respectively. The annual average rainfall is 152 cm. Warm clothes are needed during winter specially while traveling on a jeep.

A pair of binoculars is useful for watching birds and animals. Best time to observe the birds is in the morning and evening. Though Kanha is more famous for its wildlife, the natural beauty of its landscape is just as fascinating.

One of the best locations to enjoy the bounty is Bamni Dadar also known as the sunset point. A famous legend surrounds Shravan tal, the earth -bound tank at the north-eastern edge of Kanha meadow. Here the accidental killing of young Shravan Kumar by King Dasharatha led to the epic story of Valmiki's Ramayana.

The nearest airport is Jabalpur, 170 km connected to Delhi and Bhopal by Air Deccan. Jabalpur is also the most convenient railhead with services from many parts of the country and reasonably good infrastructure of hotels and car hire agencies. From Jabalpur the road to Kanha goes via Mandla (95km) which is also the headquarters for the park administration.

It is a two-lane state highway of fair quality with traffic of medium density. From Mandla one has to take the highway to Seoni till Chiraidongri a small township 30 km away. This is the turn off point to Khatia, the entrance to the park and Kisli, one of the main tourist centres in the park. Beyond Chiraidongri is a single lane road with little traffic.
