Lakes In Orissa
Dotted with small islands-including the picturesquely Honeymoon Island and Breakfast Island-Chilka Lake is the Asia's largest brackish water lake. The pear shaped lagoon is one of the few places in India where one can find Irrawadi dolphins and exotic migratory birds. Spread across 1,100 sq.km the lake has a unique ecosystem with a range of aquatic flora and fauna. An impressive array of bird life, both native and migrant makes Chilka one of the best places in India for a bit of satisfying bird-watching. The main centres on the lake are Barkul (105 km) and Rambha (130 km) reached best by road from Bhubaneswar, the route lies along National Highway 5. A number of south bound trains from Bhubaneswar touch stations near the lake-Balugaon, Chilka, Kallikot and Rambha.
Beyond Chilka is this quiet and beautiful sea resort. An ancient sea-port now the sole reminder of the sea-going days is a small lighthouse. The railhead to Gopalpur is Berhampur which is about 3 hours from Bhubaneswar.
It is located 60km from Baripada and 16 km from Balasore. It is a unique beach resort with a vanishing sea. The sea recedes to a distance of about 5 km twice a day. It is a rarity of nature. The Panthanivas of OTDC and small private hotels provide accommodation.
