Bikaner a sprawling desert town has a fort with some of the finest interiors in India and a bustling old walled city encompassing dark red sandstone havelis and exquisitely painted Jain temples. The fort 500 years old offered Bikaner people safety from invaders while the rulers designed some beautiful apartments within which still echo that opulence.
The area is famous for the intricate rich gold painting work by Muslim artisans.Bikaner is a good base for camel safaris as well as for visiting the extraordinary Karni Mata temple, 30 km to the south where rats are offered sanctuary as they are considered sacred.
Bikaner was founded in 1488 by Rao Bika a descendant of Jodha, the founder of Jodhapur.The old city is surrounded by a high crenellated wall it was another important staging post on the great caravan trade routes.

By Road: NH8 connects Agra to Bikaner via Jaipur while NH 11 runs from Pathankot to Kandla port via Amritsar and Bhatinda.Some important road distances are Jaipur 330 km,Jaisalmer 335 km,Bikaner 260 km and Delhi 488 km.
